No Bail For Teen Charged In New Dad Stabbing
CATONSVILLE, Md. (WJZ) ―
A 17-year-old faces life in prison for stabbing a father to death just hours before the birth of his son.
Mike Hellgren reports the teen's family has a message for the victim's grieving relatives.
Carlos Santay-Carrillo's friends and family grieve over his senseless murder.
It happened at a gas station in Catonsville where he was filling up his tank before taking his pregnant wife to the hospital to give birth.
By the time she did, Santay-Carrillo was dead.
Now, 17-year-old Danny Thompson, Jr. faces life in prison after police charged him with first-degree murder.
Much of Thompson's family had no response when asked if they believe he's guilty. One relative had a message for the victim's loved ones.
"Just give my condolences to the family. I'm sorry it happened like that. No further comment," said the relative.
Surveillance video from a nearby business showing the suspect running from the scene allowed police to make the arrest. Charging documents reveal that footage, combined with witness tips, matched the teen to the crime.
"They found in his house, the clothes he was seen wearing as he ran past the video surveillance camera," said Bill Toohey with Baltimore County Police.
The suspected teen killer lived on Granville Road, which is less than a mile from the crime scene.
"I can't believe it. I can't believe that that child was involved," said neighbor Mary Panelli.
The spokeswoman for the victim's family says police briefed them.
"They told us he confessed to it, to everything," said Bertha Anderson.
Congressman Elijah Cummings arrived at the gas station seconds after the crime, holding the victim as he died.
"We're in desperate times. Sadly people do desperate things, but there's no excuse to take somebody's life," said Cummings.
Like the man accused of killing Carrillo, the victim was also a teenager.
At age 19, he was ecstatic about being a dad.
Carrillo's widow simply wants justice and sees the arrest as a major step toward it.
"She did start crying, and she just kept saying that God had answered her prayers," said Anderson.
Carrillo's body will likely be shipped back to his native Guatemala to be buried.
