Md. Senate To Resume Car Seat Debate
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) ―
Should kids in Maryland have to ride in car seats longer?
The Maryland Senate is scheduled to resume debate on a bill to require children under age eight to ride in booster seats. Current law requires kids to be in booster seats only until age six.
The Senate rejected the bill Thursday, but revived it later in the day. Then, they changed it to strike the age requirement in favor of a weight requirement. Now the bill would require booster seats for kids weighing less than 50 pounds.
The bill returns to debate Friday, with supporters saying the bill would prevent child injuries. But opponents say the measure is an unnecessary intrusion, and that parents should not be penalized if they don't put older kids in booster seats.
