Maryland's children would have to be in car seats for two extra years under a bill proposed by a state senator.
Democratic Senator Jennie Forehand of Montgomery County has proposed raising to age eight the requirement that children in cars be in a child safety seat. Current law requires the seats only until age six.
Forehand says her bill is a safety measure that follows national recommendations about how old children need to be before riding in an automobile without a special seat.
Forehand says some of Maryland's neighboring states already require child seats until age eight.
