Graul's Market Raises Money For Fight Cancer Day

MAYS CHAPEL, Md. (WJZ) ―

Hundreds of Baltimoreans came out Friday to raise money and awareness in the fight against cancer. It happened in Mays Chapel, Baltimore County.

Ron Matz has more on how one family's loss led to a community-wide effort.

At Graul's Market in Mays Chapel, it's the seventh annual Fight Cancer Day.  Five percent of all sales will be donated to the American Cancer Society.

"Today, I'm stopping by to buy some shrimp for the weekend to help support their drive, to help prevent cancer," said Bruce McEntee.

A loss in the family led to Fight Cancer Day.

"My grandfather died of cancer several years ago. The family rallied around it and decided we wanted to do something to give back to the community in his memory," said Dennis Graul.

For many people in Mays Chapel, the fight against cancer is personal.

Elizabeth Edelstein and the Johns Hopkins Colon Cancer Center are spreading the word about the importance of cancer screenings, in memory of her husband Daniel who died at 53.

What started at Graul's has turned into a community event. In the first six years, the Graul's Fight Cancer Day has raised $300,000.
