The Greenebaum Cancer Center at the University of Maryland has been chosen as a National Cancer Institute cancer center.

A prestigious honor for one of Maryland's top hospitals.
Healthwatch reporter Kellye Lynn was at the University of Maryland as cancer experts announced the hospital's new designation.
The University of Maryland Greenebaum Cancer Center joins an elite group of hospitals around the country. In recognition of outstanding patient care and scientific excellence, the National Cancer Institute gives its stamp of approval.
"I'm overwhelmed and very proud," cancer survivor Marlene Greenebaum said.
Marlene Greenebaum and her philanthropist husband Stewart were at the University of Maryland Wednesday where doctors announced the designation. The center that carries their name is now among a special group.
As part of the designation, the Cancer Center receives up to $3 million in funding over the next three years and has access to grants and clinical trials that are only available to designated centers.
"Some of the newer drugs being channeled through NCI will now be available to patients at our center as a result of this designation," said Dr. Kevin Cullen, director of the Greenebaum Cancer Center.
One of those patients is lung cancer survivor Leon Burns, who has received radiation, chemotherapy and surgery at Greenebaum.
"It is my desire that the research and care will serve as a change agent for future cancer centers," he said.
This designation also paves the way for breakthrough research like the development of aromatase inhibitors for breast cancer, a discovery made by scientist Angela Brodie at the Greenebaum Cancer Center.
Only 63 other centers in the United States have the National Cancer Institute Designation, including Johns Hopkins Hospital.
