Yellow Transportation Taxis Are Going Green

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ― Some Baltimore taxis are about to get a new look and a new feel. A major cab company is making some environmentally friendly changes.

Ron Matz reports Yellow Transportation is going green.

The yellow cab is as familiar to Baltimoreans as the Ravens or Orioles, but soon some of them will add a little green.

Hybrid taxis are ready to hit the streets.

Yellow Transportation will introduce 25 Toyota Prius hybrids to the company's fleet starting next month.

Veteran cabbie Joe Matthews will be driving the first one.

"I'm going to be driving the very first one. It's great. Number one, they get about 48 miles to the gallon, which will help my pocket. But it's also very environmentally safe.  Our customers will be riding in clean air vehicles," said Matthews.

Ask any cabbie and they'll tell you they're feeling the pain at the pump. The average taxi driver in Baltimore is now spending about $300 a week on gas.  Going green is expected to change that.

"We're anticipating drivers are going to see about $500 a month in gas savings," said Andre Taylor, operations manager for Yellow Transportation.

The Prius is not your father's taxi. Technology is helping yellow go green.

"The Prius is going to be outstanding in Baltimore. It's going to do well in the city and we hope other companies follow our lead and make a difference in Baltimore," said Taylor.

Yellow Transportation has about 700 cabs in its fleet.  The company hopes to increase the number of hybrids every year.
