Whether you're hitting the road or taking to the sky this holiday weekend, you'll be in for a lot of company.
Andrea Fujii reports it's going to be a busy travel day at BWI Thurgood Marshall and on Maryland's roads, waterways and rails.
The recession has severely reduced the number of people packing planes. But this year, things are looking up.
"We expect about 375,000 passengers to fly through the airport for Thanksgiving. That's a solid eight percent increase over last year," said Jonathan Dean, BWI Thurgood Marshall spokesperson.
When it comes to people traveling 50 miles or more round trip, most will do it on the road. AAA Mid-Atlantic predicts nearly 670,000 people will be driving this year. That's an increase of nearly five percent. There will be similar increases on buses and trains.
Whether by rail, by road, by boat or by plane, travel experts say leave extra time, especially at the airport.
"Sometimes it can be an hour or more wait for security," said one traveler.
To speed things up, the Transportation Security Administration wants you to check as much of your baggage as possible.
"If we can reduce the number of bag checks that we need to do, it simply speeds up the travel process for all travelers," said Lauren Gaches, TSA spokesperson.
The first flight from BWI Thurgood Marshall left on time Wednesday at 5:20 a.m. They hope to keep that trend up throughout the day. BWI recommends passengers arrive at least 90 minutes prior to their flights.
Marylanders will travel farther to reach their destinations than people from other states. The average Maryland traveler will go nearly 1,100 miles per round trip. The national average is 900.
