BWI Expects Busy Thanksgiving Season
LINTHICUM, Md. (WJZ) ―
If the Thanksgiving holiday means an airplane ride, get ready for plenty of company.
Alex DeMetrick reports the number of travelers at BWI Marshall will be at or near pre-recession numbers.
A jet may get you to your Thanksgiving destination, but first you have to get to the jet. At BWI Marshall, the low numbers a year ago are back up this year.
"We expect about 375,000 passengers to fly through the airport for Thanksgiving. That's a solid eight percent increase over last year," said Jonathan Dean, BWI Marshall spokesperson.
More people also means more time is often needed to get through security. What takes the most time is checking out carry-ons.
TSA is reminding passengers that while they are able to travel with baked goods, like pies, through the security checkpoint, they may receive additional screening of those items. Travelers should avoid wrapping gifts before they arrive at their destination and should ensure they are not traveling with common holiday items, like snow globes, in their carry-on luggage.
It also doesn't hurt to get there early. Between now and Sunday, BWI Marshall is recommending passengers arrive at least 90 minutes before their flights.
Special family and medical liquid lanes, which were started last Thanksgiving, are open and recommended for people traveling with young children or elderly relatives.
