Congressman Wayne Gilchrest is under fire for not being supportive enough of President Bush. But he has a powerful backer -- Bush himself.
The president has endorsed Gilchrest in the hard-fought GOP primary in Maryland's first district. He wrote a letter saying Gilchrest "is an example of what's great about America" -- citing his experience as a schoolteacher and a combat veteran wounded in Vietnam.
Gilchrest says he did not expect the endorsement. Two state senators running against Gilchrest have criticized him as disloyal and not conservative enough for the district.
But the congressman says those criticisms "have no real weight in reality." He says he sometimes disagrees with Bush, but he works with the president to find common ground.
