Ex-Baltimore Mayor Helps Roland Burris' Senate Bid

BALTIMORE (AP) ― A former Baltimore mayor is working on Roland Burris' team to help the Illinois man join the U.S. Senate.

Kurt Schmoke says the law is on his friend's side as Burris tries to fill the Senate seat Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich named him to.

On Tuesday, the U.S. Senate denied Burris' attempt by saying he didn't have the needed credentials, including a failure to get the Illinois Secretary of State's approval.

Schmoke says Burris just wants to serve Illinois' citizens. He received a call to join Burris in his efforts as Burris was putting together a legal team.

Schmoke, an attorney, says Burris doesn't want to go to court to fight for the seat but is willing to if he has to.
