Md. Budget Cuts Reduce Services To Disabled

CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) ― A nonprofit group that coordinates services to Maryland's developmentally disabled says state budget cuts have forced it to slash 74 jobs and scale back its work.

Cari Oleskewicz of Service Coordination Inc. said Monday the organization lost $3.2 million when a 15 percent cut in resource coordination spending took effect Oct. 1.

She says that left the group with an $18 million budget and 295 positions.

Oleskewicz tells the Cumberland Times-News her group has reduced the assistance it provides to about 19,000 people on an approved waiting list for state services.

She says service coordinators help those people find community services that don't require state funding. They also help them avoid homelessness, bankruptcy, and personal health and safety crises.
