There are budget cuts behind us and more cuts are to come. The state of Maryland has proposed almost $70 million in new cuts, including money for schools, health departments and local police.
Political reporter Pat Warren has the latest from Governor Martin O'Malley.
The cuts that were going to be made during Wednesday's Board of Public Works meeting will not be made until after the General Assembly resumes Jan. 14.
"A lot of our work over the course of the next week is bringing legislative leadership, committee chairs, the president and the speaker up to pace on the ground we have covered over the last few months of looking at this budget and understanding the abnormality of the challenge, the reasons why we are making the cuts we're making," said Governor O'Malley.
Local governments have largely been spared budget cuts, but this time with the state facing a projected $2 billion budget deficit, it does not look like they are going to escape.
"We are conserving as much as we can," said Ken Ulman, Howard County Executive. "We're preparing state budgets."
This year's budget ends in June. The governor will present a 2010 budget to the General Assembly by Jan 21.
