Arrest Made In Correctional Officer's Murder Case

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ― Police investigators have linked a man to the murder of a correctional officer and a string of armed robberies near the Morgan State University campus.

Mike Hellgren reports the man is in custody and has confessed to that officer's murder---a victim who was also his neighbor.

Exclusive home video shows a scene from the deadly armed robbery gone bad back in May.

Veteran correctional officer Lieutenant Perry Brooks was shot in the head.

After an intense investigation, police charged 21-year-old Brandon Wall with the murder.

"It's a cruel world. Anyone who would do something like this to him could not have known the person who he was," said Major David Becketts, Brooks' supervisor.

The break came as investigators looked at a string of armed robberies.

"The detectives pretty much followed the path in the trail of those robberies which ultimately led to the suspect which ultimately led to his arrest and confession," said Donny Moses spokesperson for the Baltimore City Police Department.

Police say Wall gave his address as a home just a block away from his victim.

Charging documents reveal during that robbery, Wall approached the officer from the driver's side of his car. The officer was shot with a nine millimeter handgun.

In his confession, police say Wall told them, "Mr. Brooks reacted by grabbing for the gun during which time a struggle ensued," and that "He attempted to slap the gun free from the victim's grasp, during which time the gun discharged."

"He was a friend. He was a good friend. He was an excellent co-worker. There's not enough that I can say about him," said Lt. Cynthia Norfleet.

Wall is also charged with an attempted murder steps form the Morgan State campus on Hillen Road.

Police say he ran toward the victim, who was getting in his car, shouting, "Give me your wallet," before shooting him in the right side.

The victim on Hillen Road survived the shooting.

Court records reveal Wall had several past arrests.

"They'll never get their family member back, their husband and father," said Moses.

Police originally thought the officer had been a victim of a hit because of his job but now believe robbery was the only motive.
