Police Investigate After Former Marine Found Dead

GWYNN OAK, Md. (WJZ) ―

Police are trying to find out how a man wound up dead, lying facedown in a driveway and shocking neighbors in a Gwynn Oak community.

Weijia Jiang has the latest from Baltimore County police.

Neighbors say they cannot imagine why anyone would hurt the victim, who they describe as quiet and kind.

Patrol cars and detectives lined the 3500-block of Tulsa Road Monday, after a resident made a gruesome discovery.

"Seven-thirty this morning, a resident came out and found the body of a dead man on the driveway, and called police," said Bill Toohey, Baltimore County Police spokesperson.

"This is really, really unusual for this neighborhood," said neighbor Eleanor Washington.

Police identified the victim as Grayson Kenney Jr., who served four years in the U.S. Marine Corps.  They say Kenney, 46, was shot multiple times.

"Five shots," said Curtis Bell, Kenney's friend.  "Bang, bang, bang."

Bell, who lives next door to the driveway where Kenney's body was found, says he heard shots at 1:30 a.m. Monday, but he never imagined it was his friend of 20 years who received them.  Kenney lived in a shed behind Bell's house and earned money by doing odd jobs in the neighborhood.

"Sad, it really is.  I really liked him.  He was like my own kid," Bell said.

He says it was especially sad because he and Kenney had just watched the Ravens game together hours before.

"You got mean people out here," Bell said.

He believes his friend left his house in the middle of the night to get a pack of cigarettes at the corner store, but he says somewhere near the driveway, Kenney met the wrong person at the wrong time.

"It's not like he had enemies.  People knew him.  He wasn't out there raising hell or nothing; he just went to the store," Bell said.

"People don't care for people anymore," said neighbor Karen Davenport.  "I couldn't believe it.  I just couldn't believe it."

With no motive and no suspects, police urge the public to help.

"Did anybody see anything, hear anything?  Have any light on this to shed at all?" Toohey said.

Homicide detectives believe the motive may have been robbery.

Metro Crime Stoppers is offering a cash reward of up to $2,000 for tips.  You can reach them at 1-866-7-LOCKUP.
