Victim Identified In School Stabbing

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ― There are new details in a fatal stabbing outside a Baltimore City middle school.

Weijia Jiang reports the victim has been identified and investigators have charged a suspect with the crime.

A pile of clothes behind William H. Lemmel Middle School marks the area where police found one of the students lying in a pool of blood on Friday afternoon.

"He was suffering from obvious signs of trauma," Donny Moses of Baltimore City Police said.

The victim has been identified as Markel Williams, just 15-years-old.

Police say another teenager, who turned himself in, stabbed Williams several times in the chest during school hours. Williams was transported to Sinai Hospital, where he died shortly after.

Police say Williams, who had been arrested several times, was on the city's list of most troubled teens.

Police say another teen has been charged with first-degree murder in Williams' death, but his name has not been released.

"Violent crime with young people is rising, even though crime is going down," said Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon. "This is very disturbing."

The school stabbing is the second teen homicide this week. Police say someone shot and killed 14-year-old Steven Graham in South Baltimore Tuesday.

"It is very clear that these young people are crying out for help," Dixon said.

But what kind of help is the question city and school leaders are trying to determine.

"We've gotta all be engaged in this. It's gonna take all of us to change some of the violence that's happening in these schools," Dixon said.

School leaders say grief counselors will stay at the school next week.

This is the city's 23rd teen homicide victim this year.
