Crash Victim Was Legendary Boat Builder

ST. MICHAELS, Md. (WJZ/AP) ―

The man who died with his sister in a crash with a state police cruiser in St. Michaels was a legendary boat builder.

Kelly McPherson reports Maynard Lowery, 88, of Tilghman was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash Monday. His sister, 87-year-old Alma Lowery, also of Tilghman, died at Easton Memorial Hospital, where she was taken after the crash.

Maynard Lowery built his first boat, an eight-footer, as a child. After a stint in the U.S. Coast Guard, he started building boats full time in the 1950s.

In 2006, he said, he sold a 16-foot catboat to former secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld. That same year, Lowery said in an interview with The (Easton) Star Democrat, he had his knees replaced and completed a new boat house.
