Md. Mine Blast Overflows Pond, Injures Worker
BARTON, Md. (AP) ―
The Maryland Bureau of Mines says a mine worker was hurt after a blast caused a pond to overflow in western Maryland.
Bureau Director John Carey says the blast at the mine near Barton in Allegany County on Friday blew debris in the wrong direction. Some of the debris landed in a sediment pond, which overflowed, sending a rush of debris onto a coal road.
Carey says Vindex Energy mine superintendent Rodney Tichnell was driving a truck on the road and the debris pushed his truck 100 feet down a slope.
He says both Tichnell and another man in the truck weren't seriously injured. Tichnell was examined at Garrett Memorial Hospital for a minor head injury and released. The second man in the truck didn't need medical treatment.
The Bureau of Mines is investigating the incident.
