New Movie Based On Dr. Ben Carson Premieres

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ― A new movie based on world-renowned pediatric neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson premiered in Baltimore Monday night.

Kai Jackson has more on the movie and what the premiere will benefit.

Dr. Ben Carson's life mirrors the American dream.  That's why Hollywood has been chomping at the bit for more than a decade to tell the world-renowned neurosurgeon's inspiring story. It finally comes to life in a made-for-TV movie airing Saturday night on TNT.

"When I saw the movie the first time, I was very touched.  You do need a Kleenex," Carson said.

The movie is called "Gifted Hands," after Carson's first autobiography.  It recounts the ups and downs of his life beginning with his childhood growing up with a struggling single mother, played in the movie by Kimberly Elise.

Academy Award-winning actor Cuba Gooding Jr. stars as the grown-up Carson.

"Cuba pulls off the calm demeanor in the movie, no questions about it.  He watched me, he watched how I hold my hands.  He's a quick study," Carson said.

Dr. Carson says when he wasn't consulting producers on the set, he was taking their calls--as many as five a day--all in an effort to make sure his story and the message behind it was told accurately.

"What my life kind of indicates is it's not where you came from but where you're going that counts and that you have a lot to say about where you are going," he said.

Carson says he personally pushed for a TV movie instead of a feature film because he wanted more people to be able to see it for free.
