A Baltimore man says he's finally received justice two years after he was beaten up by a city police officer, an incident that was caught on tape.
Dennis Edwards reports the money involved won't break any records, but the victim of a beating at police hands says his two-year struggle has never been about the money.
Glen Curry's attorney argued a video shows Baltimore City Police Officer Jimmy Shetterly punching and throwing a handcuffed Glen Curry to the ground and dragging him by his feet.
Two years later, Shetterly's attorneys decided to settle a civil trial against him after four days of testimony and 15 minutes of jury deliberations.
"It proves that what I said from the very beginning was absolutely right. I did nothing whatsoever to merit these officers' behavior, that they were entirely wrong," said Curry.
Both sides agree to a $24,000 settlement. It ends Curry's long struggle through criminal charges brought and then dropped against him.
"The attorney in this case tried to bring those criminal issues up in this trial and tried to try the criminal trial to get a judgment, but it didn't work," said Granville Templeton, Curry's attorney.
The settlement agreement was filed with the court system earlier this week, but so far city officials aren't talking about the details.
Curry says he still suffers with nerve damage resulting from the assault. He also fears what he calls on-going police hostility toward him.
"I'm satisfied with the settlement, the money part of it, which was $24,000, if you need to know. The issue was proving that we were right, and they were wrong," said Curry.
Curry and his attorney say the jury was polled after the trial. They say it would have found the officer guilty of seven counts.
Now he hopes his victory sends a message to other officers.
