The Chesapeake Bay may be in serious trouble but environmentalists think politics is catching up with public concern. As
Alex DeMetrick reports, that's stepping up the pressure in Annapolis.
Spring-like weather may have tempted most to go outside, but environmentalists were lining up to spend the day indoors to organize a lobbying campaign of the state legislature.
"We're bringing activists from all around the state to come and talk about environmental priorities," said organizer Cindy Schwartz.
One of those priorities jumps out at high tide. Annapolis, like much of coastal Maryland, is vulnerable to rising sea levels. A bill capping greenhouse emissions is being pushed.
Reducing pollutants in storm water runoff is another priority. Nitrogen and phosphorous flow into the bay, feeding algae blooms that block light and destroy oxygen.
About $50 million a year is being committed to restoring the bay.
