Bay Bridge Walk Canceled For 2008, 2009

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) ―

Repair work has caused Maryland transportation authorities to cancel the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Walk for the next two years.

The annual springtime walk is on hold because the Maryland Transportation Authority concluded it would not be safe for the 50,000 or so participants who walk the bridge each year.

A staging area near the base of the eastbound span won't be available for bus use because it's needed to store equipment and panels for the bridge.

The walk was canceled three times in the first half of this decade, but the event resumed last year.

Transportation Authority head Ronald Freeland says the walk is popular, but safety concerns require it to be postponed until after construction.
