For most of us, there's only one way to cross the waters of the Chesapeake to the Eastern Shore and that's the Bay Bridge. But with accidents, construction and now the replacement of corroding jersey walls, is it time for another option?
Adam May reports the original 56-year-old Bay Bridge is barely able to keep up with the demands of the 25 million drivers who use it each year. Accidents like the one earlier this month led to hours of traffic delays with no good alternative routes.
Once again, construction--like the emergency repairs underway to secure the jersey walls because they're corroding--bring back the question of whether we need another bridge.
"It has been looked at a number of times. There is no easy, short-term viable crossing alternative," said John Porcari, Maryland Transportation Secretary.
A 2005 task force came up with four new possible bridge locations: Baltimore County to Kent County, adding another span to the Bay Bridge, a new 10-12 mile bridge connecting the western shore to Talbot County and a new one to Ocean City through Calvert and Dorchester County.
The report did not make a recommendation, however.
Other ideas tossed around the last few years include a monorail service or the return of ferries.
