Police: Officer Helped Bank Burglar

TEMPLE HILLS, Md. (AP) ― Prince George's County Police say an officer provided power tools for a man to break into a safe at a Temple Hills bank and stood guard in uniform.

Police say phone lines were cut after the SunTrust bank branch in the 4600 block of Old Branch Avenue closed Tuesday. Six hours later a secret alarm brought firefighters to the bank and they saw a masked man fleeing and an officer who appeared to be giving chase.

Charging documents state that 52-year-old Earl Blake of Capitol Heights told investigators that Cpl. Eddie Smith gave him the tools, drove him to the bank and acted as a lookout while Blake tried to saw open the bank's ATM safe.

Smith is charged with breaking and entering, a weapons charge and other offenses. Blake was charged with burglary and other offenses.
