Kenyan Julius Keter Wins Baltimore Marathon

BALTIMORE (WJZ/AP) ―

Kenyan Julius Keter won the Baltimore Marathon on Saturday.  Maria Portilla of Peru won the women's race.

Fellow Kenyan and two-time Baltimore Marathon winner John Itati, who won last year, finished tenth.

Slight modifications were made to the 2008 course with the opening of the Hilton Convention Center Hotel.

The course did travel through the many diverse neighborhoods including the scenic Inner Harbor waterfront area, historic Federal Hill and charming Fells Point. The loop around Lake Montebello also returned this year giving runners flat terrain near mile 21.

The half-marathon started at the 13-mile mark of the marathon course, but as it has done in the past, it split and rejoined the marathon route later in the race.

The separation between the marathon and half-marathon courses alleviated much of the congestion at the merge point and made for a smoother transition.

Marathon participants wore a bib with the word "FULL" and team relay participants wore a "R" bib on their backs to distinguish them from the half-marathon participants.
