Baltimore police are reporting a sharp decline in homicides in January, compared with last year.
Police say there were 14 murders last month, the city's lowest number since 1978.
There were 26 homicides in January 2007, 29 in January 2006 and 32 in January 2005.
City officials say the downward trend has been encouraging, but they warn that now is not the time to get complacent.
Mayor Sheila Dixon attributes at least part of the decline to greater cooperation between law enforcement agencies.
Some criminologists note, however, that homicides are dropping in many major cities.
