Balt. Co. Police Investigate Towson Student's Rape

TOWSON, Md. (WJZ) ― Baltimore County Police are searching for an attacker after a Towson University student says she was raped.

Jessica Kartalija reports police are hoping that someone may have noticed something suspicious that could potentially lead them to the rapist.

The brutal rape happened just blocks from Towson University at a student apartment complex in the 7900-block of Knollwood Road.

The 21-year-old victim told police that she was in a parking lot unpacking groceries from her car when the suspect approached her from behind with what she thought was a gun.  He took her three blocks away to a wooded area and raped her.

"A black male, he was behind her, when he started to assault her.  She was terrified and traumatized," said Bill Toohey, Baltimore County Police spokesperson.

The victim was taken to GBMC's Safe Center where she was treated.  Police hope evidence collected there could provide information on her attacker.

"They've come up with a couple leads, but someone might have been driving through that area and saw something off, maybe a car driving just too fast as sometimes happens," said Toohey.

Though the rape occurred blocks from campus, the university is notifying students.

"Don't go out by yourself, bring a friend, there is always someone to be with, just be careful," said a student.

"It may have been a crime of opportunity and he may not come back there again. On the other hand, he may come back there again.  If anyone sees anything that doesn't look right, call 911," said Toohey.

Police are contacting residents via e-mail. They are asking them to be on the lookout for anything suspicious.
