A baby dolphin at the aquarium is making a big splash.
Jessica Kartalija reports the three-month-old has a new name.
"She is great. She is three-months-old and she is eating fish--up to a half pound each day. She's playing with toys," said Deirdre Weadock with the National Aquarium in Baltimore.
Like Samson, the zoo's baby elephant, it was up to the community to come up with a name. Trainers and volunteers at the aquarium came up with the names. It was then up to the people of Baltimore to vote on one.
There were five names to choose from: Bayley, Callie, Charm, Hanna and Sassafras. So why the long wait?
"We do wait a little superstitiously to make sure that everything is OK, but she's doing great. She's had all the best care in the world from trainers and mostly on the part of the dolphins, so we feel confident giving her a name right now and we're excited," Weadock said.
Mayor Dixon announced the dolphin's name: Bayley.
Getting the community involved in baby naming seems to be a good way to get visitors to the aquarium.
A third of dolphin calves don't survive their first year. Bayley's trainers say she is a strong and healthy baby girl.
