Baby Not Hit By Bullet In Southeast Baltimore
BALTIMORE (WJZ) ―
Police say a baby was not hit by a bullet in Southeast Baltimore.
Dennis Edwards reports police initially thought a two-month-old was grazed or injured Monday when a bullet passed through a wall, forcing a relative holding the baby boy to run for cover. They say now that's not the case.
Shots rang out in rapid succession inside a rowhouse in O'Donnell Heights.
Neighbors who don't want their names or faces on camera talked about a hectic scene.
"Sad. It's just a sad situation for a child," a neighbor said.
Two men were taken into custody. Police call them persons of interest.
A police spokesperson denied an on-camera interview about what he called an ongoing investigation. But he told
Eyewitness News the shooting apparently took place among a group of men inside a rowhouse.
The two-month-old boy was in a relative's arms next door when at least one bullet passed through the wall.
Police say after investigating overnight, it's believed the baby struck its head on something.
The aunt says when she heard gunfire, she picked up the baby and hit the floor to get out of the way. It's possible that that's when the baby injured its head.
Detectives say the way the bullet came in, it would have been impossible to have been hit by the bullet.
Neighbors tell Eyewitness News this is the second time in 24 hours that they've heard multiple shots fired in this general area.
Several residents said they heard as many as 17 shots Sunday night. Some openly wondered whether this incident is related to an ongoing dispute. Police say they received no shooting calls.
"It's crazy out here. I can't wait to get out of here myself," a neighbor said.
So far suspects haven't been identified. The child's injuries are believed to be non-life threatening.
