4 People Brutally Attacked In Federal Hill

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ―

Baltimore City Police are investigating a vicious attack in Federal Hill that sent several people to the hospital.

Dennis Edwards reports witnesses describe a street-level melee over the weekend in which several people were involved in intense fights.

It's 2 a.m. Sunday in the 100-block of West Street.  Bars are closing and more than 30 people believed to have been drinking and celebrating Preakness all day are pouring out onto the street.

Bill Leahy heard loud voices from his apartment window just above the scene.

"I saw a fight break out. There was a lot of jawin' goin' on and pushing and shoving and then this girl came off the sidewalk and hit this guy and coldcocked him and then everything broke out," he said.

Leahy said there were four or five separate fights up and down the street.  It's unclear who said what and why.

"Two girls were right here on top of each other, fighting each other.  I couldn't believe it.  There were actually girls fighting.  And then it moved all the way up the street," he said.  "At one point, one of the girls got back into her car, backed up here and tried to leave the scene and hit a city bus."

"After the victims told them they saw the accident and were going to call police, we believe that's the motivation for them to try to find them and then cause the assault," said Troy Harris with Baltimore City Police.

Eyewitness News
talked to one fight participant who declined on-camera interviews in fear of her safety.

One of the fights was described in an email to Eyewitness News.  She says, "A girl still had me by the hair and was smashing my face into the sidewalk and kicking me even more.  I have a bloody ear, elbows, knees and multiple bruises throughout my body."

Police say a second woman apparently joined one of the fights armed with an ice pick or knife.  In addition to the beating, three men were stabbed.

"There was a mix of black and white and guys and girls," Leahy said.  "I've been in and out of this area for 10 or 12 years.  It just seems like it's getting younger and it seems like everyone's a little more on edge around here."

"I'm scared. I'm nervous.  I don't like the fact that it's right in front of where I work, two blocks from where I live," said Stephanie Sheu Brooks, a resident and business owner.

The search continues for two women who fled the scene.

The bustling neighborhood will soon be home to first daughter Jenna Bush.
