2 Arrested In 2002 Baltimore Co. Murder

TOWSON, Md. (WJZ) ― Baltimore County police crack a half-decade-old cold case and bring some closure to a Woodlawn family.

Gigi Barnett reports 18-year-old David Baskin was murdered in 2002, and now police have two suspects in custody, including one that was pulled out of a college class.

The suspect is a student at Adelphi College in Long Island, N.Y.  On Thursday, he was pulled out of class and arrested for murder.

Baltimore County Police arrested 21-year-old Charles Davis and 21-year-old student Nicholas Weaver.

Investigators say the two men murdered David Baskin, Jr. in 2002.

At the time, the victim was 18, and the suspects were 16.

"We have talked to several witnesses, and in this case, since we've gotten new information, we've been able to come up with probable cause to issue warrants for the arrest of these two people charging them with the murder," said Cpl. Mike Hill, spokesperson for Baltimore County Police.

But now, the men will be charged as adults.

On the night of July 3, 2002, police were called to the 2500-block of Elsmere Court in Baltimore County.  They found Baskin dead from a gunshot wound.

Detectives interviewed witnesses, but nothing turned up.

The case grew cold, but late last month, a witness came forward with enough information to arrest Davis and Weaver.

"Our cold case squad was not looking at this at the time. It just happened that this person came to us and offered that information, and that led us to open the investigation back up," said Hill.

Police believe the motive to shoot Baskin was a feud over a girl. Hill says detectives never stopped working it.

"In a homicide detective's blood, these cases become very personal, and you never do," said Hill.

In addition to the witness, police say they also received help from the victim's family after they won money in the lottery.

"It was God's will to help us promote this," said a relative.

Police have charged Davis with first-degree murder. Weaver, the college student, is still in New York waiting to be sent to Baltimore.

Police say Weaver should be extradited soon.
