The top suspect in the anthrax attacks is being recalled by friends and family as a compassionate man and a talented scientist.
More than 250 people attended the memorial service for Bruce Ivins, who died last month.
Officials say Ivins killed himself as authorities were about to charge him.
The service was held at St. John's the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church.
Some people who knew Ivins say they can't believe that he was behind the 2001 mailings that killed five people and sickened more than a dozen.
A woman who volunteered with Ivins said, "There's just no way" he could have done it. She adds that authorities must have just "grabbed a convenient person."
Speakers at the service talked about Ivins' musical talents and his many hobbies, including juggling, target shooting and practical jokes.
His brother said at least Ivins' "torment" is over.
