Annapolis police have arrested a suspect in the shooting deaths of two people inside a home.
Officers say 56-year-old Elbert Gardner was charged late Wednesday in the slayings. Police say he lived in the basement of the home where the two victims were found and that he confessed to both killings.
Kelly McPherson reports police focused their investigation on a new piece of evidence.
A well-maintained neighborhood near the Naval Academy has been shaken by murder.
"It's like, `Okay, what's going on?' Kind of a shock a little bit, but it's a strange world we live in these days," said neighbor Fred Foreman.
A man and a woman whom police have not identified were found shot to death in a home on Wednesday. Neighbors have described them as a middle-aged couple who also lived with a young boy.
"I just feel so sorry for that little boy. I can hardly stand it," said neighbor Jean Paterson.
Police say neighbors called 911 around 11 p.m. Tuesday saying they heard gunshots. When a cruiser came through, they didn't see anything wrong on the street. The two bodies were found at 5:30 Wednesday morning.
"It sounds like a family issue so it's not an indicator of crime or anything," said Larry Wilson.
Neighbors have been assured by police that there is no threat to the community.
"Everything is being looked at, including the possibility that the victim knew the suspect or suspects. It's still all part of the investigation," said Ray Weaver, Annapolis Police Department.
Wednesday evening, police were still collecting evidence. Attention was given to a red car that was towed away.
"All I know is I talked to the lady a couple of times. She was a lovely lady, very quiet," Paterson said. "I think she worked and she just wasn't home very much."
