B&O Railroad Museums Restores Locomotive

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ― It's called the All American Locomotive. It was built in 1967 and was just restored to become an icon of Baltimore's railroad history.

Ron Matz reports you can see it starting this weekend at the B&O Railroad Museum.

There's nothing like a train. Railroad history will come alive this weekend in Baltimore at the B&O Railroad Museum with the unveiling of a restored Chessie System Diesel number 3802.

The locomotive was built in 1967 and designated the All American Locomotive in 1982.  CSX donated it to the B&O Railroad Museum in 2002.

The old Chessie cat logo will paint some vivid memories.

"When I was younger, I remember Chessie, so hopefully it's a little remembering of the past and how significant and important the railroad was to them," said Dave Shackelford, chief curator at the B&O Railroad Museum.

Work on the All American Locomotive was done at the B&O Restoration Shop, a facility built after the 2003 President's Day snowstorm.

That storm collapsed the roundhouse roof, causing millions of dollars in damage. But it did not cause work to be stopped all together.

"The restoration is fabulous. It took about six months of hard work," said Courtney Wilson, executive director of the B&O Railroad Museum.  "This is a great day for the museum. Anytime we can restore something that's historic and significant is a wonderful day for us."

"Trains" magazine and a private donor provided the funds for the restoration.

The All American Locomotive will be unveiled to the public 10 a.m. Saturday at the B&O Railroad Museum.
