Last Eastalco Workers Laid Off In Buckeystown

BUCKEYSTOWN, Md. (AP) ― Aluminum maker Alcoa says it is laying off the last nine workers associated with its Eastalco smelter in Buckeystown.

Spokesman Earl Robbins says the move affects three workers at the plant and six at the company's pier operations in Baltimore.

The Buckeystown plant ceased smelting operations in 2005, citing high electricity costs. There were about 600 workers then.

Pittsburgh-based Alcoa opened the plant in 1970. It employed more than 1,200 people at its peak of operations from the late 1970s to the mid-1980s.
