The bay, sailing and maritime history will all come together next month at the African-American Maritime Conference.
It's often said that the Chesapeake Bay is Maryland's most precious resource.
The bay, sailing and maritime history will all come together next month at an African-American Maritime Conference.
Kai Jackson reports it's an event designed to introduce and promote all things aquatic.
Marcus Asante untied the lines on his 30-foot sailboat at the Inner Harbor Friday to cast off. Then, it was off to another adventure on the open water.
Asante loves the water so much, he wants to share his passion with others, so he and a friend are hosting the first African-American Maritime Conference in Baltimore next month.
Asante sees it as an opportunity to promote and encourage sailing in the black community.
"I'm the founder of our Universal Sailing Club. It's one of the few African-American sailing clubs in the country. And so I've had a long interest in youth development, adult education, history, African-American history," said Asante.
Sharing the love of sailing is one of the conference goals.
Teaching participants about the African-American legacy and experience as it relates to Maryland's waterways is another goal.
In addition to sailing and history is concern for the health of the bay.
"We're taking a greater interest in the clean-up of the bay, and so those environmental and ecological issues will get touched," said Asante.
The African-American Maritime Conference is Aug. 16 and 17. Lectures take place Saturday, and then participants can hit the water sailing on Sunday.
