Md. ACLU Suing State Police Over Surveillance
BALTIMORE (AP) ―
The American Civil Liberties Union is suing Maryland State Police claiming the agency is refusing to release public documents about surveillance of peace activists.
The lawsuit was filed Thursday in Baltimore by the Maryland chapter of the ACLU. The suit claims a state police intelligence unit monitored Baltimore peace groups that protested at the National Security Agency in 2004.
An ACLU spokeswoman says the group is concerned police are hiding surveillance of political and religious activists. State Police didn't immediately return a call by The Associated Press seeking comment.
The ACLU said it has filed a Freedom of Information Act request for any surveillance documents. The group claims police are refusing to release records to protect a confidential source and police investigative techniques.
