Police Identify Baby & Man Killed In I-83 Crash

HUNT VALLEY, Md. (WJZ) ― He just became a father two months ago. Now, a 25-year-old Galesville man and his baby boy are dead.

Kai Jackson reports the tragedy unfolded early Tuesday morning when their car crashed on Interstate 83 just south of Belfast Road.

It's a heartbreaking story.  A mother is left mourning her two-month-old son and his father.  Police say it happened just when it seemed like both were going to be safe from traffic.

On Tuesday afternoon, traffic on Interstate 83 flowed as usual.  But just before 3 a.m., police sifted through what was left of a deadly two-car crash just south of Belfast Road.  Debris and mangled vehicles scattered the highway while early morning commuters waited in their cars for hours.

The collision killed 25-year-old Ronnel Offer of Galesville and his two-month-old son, Tyler.  Five other people were taken to Shock Trauma and Sinai Hospital, including 19-year-old Erika Braun, Tyler's mother.

Police say Braun was driving a 2001 Mazda when she somehow lost control and crashed right into a guardrail.

"That impact made the vehicle travel from the left side of the road and become disabled in the roadway," said Maryland State Police Sgt. Arthur Betts.

Police say the vehicle was completely disabled in the right lane of the busy highway.  They say that's when Offer tried to remove Tyler from the car.

"We actually believe he had just freed the child from the child safety seat when he was struck by the oncoming vehicle," Betts said.

That vehicle is a 1997 Toyota Prius.  Police say a York, Pa. couple was inside.  Investigators say alcohol was not a factor in the collision.  The Maryland State Police crash team is putting together a detailed reconstruction of the accident to find out how an early morning road trip ended up tearing a family apart.

Police say the two men traveling with the family have been treated and released from Shock Trauma.  The mother and the couple in the other car are still in the hospital, recovering from non-life threatening injuries.

At this time, no charges have been filed.
