Gunfire rang out during a funeral in West Baltimore Thursday night, and now a woman is dead.
As Gigi Barnett reports, police are searching for a link between two murders.
A city police officer guards each door at the Joseph H. Brown Funeral Home. Investigators say sometime around 7:30 p.m. Thursday, someone fatally shot Virginia McGahee, 34. She was attending her boyfriend's wake; he was murdered last week. Now police are searching for the shooter and evidence that would link the two murders.
"We are looking at every avenue and every angle between both incidents," said Donny Moses, Baltimore City police spokesperson.
But police don't have much. Last week, police say Michael Anthony McFadden, 51, was shot to death near his home.
As his family gathered at the funeral home to mourn, detectives say McGahee stepped outside to take a phone call and someone was watching.
"At least one gunman was parked in the parking lot. At some point, our victim, who had been inside, came outside," Moses said. "The gunman opened fire on her."
Those shots pierced McGahee's chest and the window where she was standing.
"Nothing is sacred anymore, anywhere," said funeral home owner Joseph H. Brown III.
Brown says his business buries many homicide victims, and during those services, police are called in.
"They are here for our protection, as well as the protection of the family," he said.
But he's not surprised that the wake was interrupted with deadly violence.
"It was definitely violated last night and it's not the first time. There is violence all over the world. Violence is a global issue," he said.
Police say anyone with information on either shooting should call investigators at 410-396-2100.
