Accused State's Attorney Also Faces Gun Charges

OCEAN CITY, Md. (AP) ―

The Ocean City Police Department says a criminal summons has been issued, adding a handgun misdemeanor to the drunken driving charge lodged against Wicomico County State's Attorney Davis Ruark.

The maximum penalty for transporting a handgun while intoxicated is a year in jail and a $1,000 fine.

Ocean City police say Ruark told officers at the time of his traffic stopĀ  that the loaded gun was in the car.

Ruark tells The (Salisbury) Daily Times he has faced a number of death threats while serving as state's attorney.

Wicomico County Sheriff Mike Lewis says both the gun and the car had been issued to Ruark. Lewis says it was routine procedure to issue the gun. He says the county car was issued as a take-home vehicle so Ruark could respond to crime scenes outside business hours.
