Tangier Sound Oyster Catch Rare Chesapeake Success

DEAL ISLAND, Md. (AP) ― Watermen say Tangier Sound on the lower Eastern Shore is a bright spot in the bleak picture for Chesapeake Bay oysters.

Veteran Capt. Art Daniels of Wenona says watermen working the sound are catching their limit so far in the month-old oyster season. Larry Simns, president of the Maryland Watermen's Association, says watermen have been heading to the sound because the harvest is pretty bad in other parts.

Tongers have been working since the beginning of October and the season for power dredging and skipjacks, which also use dredges, opens Monday.
