Maryland state fire marshals say an overturned oil lamp started a St. Michaels fire that injured a woman and caused $600,000 in damage to a home.
Around 4:30 a.m. Friday, firefighters from St. Michaels, Tilghman, Easton and Cordova went to the 100 block of North Talbot Street. Fifty-two firefighters had the blaze under control in about 30 minutes and investigators say the blaze was accidental.
A woman sleeping at the house woke up because she smelled smoke.
She jumped out a second-story window in the back of the house and sprained her ankle and received minor burns. She was treated and released from Easton Memorial Hospital.
Investigators say the fire started after an oil lamp burning in the house was knocked over. Flammable materials near the oil lamp caught fire.
