State Plans To Close, Renovate I-70 Rest Stops
HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) ―
Maryland's transportation and economic development agencies are announcing plans to close and renovate two rest stops along Interstate 70 near Hagerstown.
Pending approval by the state Board of Public Works, the Maryland Welcome Centers atop South Mountain will be closed April 30 for about 18 months.
Officials say the buildings will be modernized, the number of parking spaces will nearly double and the number of restroom facilities will nearly triple.
Authorities say the changes are needed to accommodate an expected increase in travelers through western Maryland.
During the renovation, travelers will be directed to a tourist information center at the Prime Outlets shopping center in Hagerstown.
