Additional Charges Filed Against Inmate

LAUREL, Md. (WJZ/AP) ― Maryland State Police have filed additional charges against a Prince George's County vehicle theft suspect who assaulted a trooper guarding him at a hospital early Tuesday.

Sally Thoner reports police have charged Kamara Mohamed, with attempted first-degree murder, first and second-degree assault, use of a handgun in commission of a felony, reckless endangerment, disarming a law enforcement officer, wearing/carrying a handgun, second degree escape, and theft over $500.

It happened inside Laurel Regional Hospital, where police say inmate Kamara Mohamad, who was taken there after complaining of chest pains, grabbed a trooper's gun and ran down four flights of stairs to the entrance.  The two struggled twice and he fired his weapon at her.  Before he did, police say he shouted, "I'm going to kill you."

"She fought very courageously as she continued to pursue him after he had taken her weapon," said Greg Shipley, spokesperson for the Maryland State Police.

The massive manhunt for Mohamad ended at a trailer off Route 1 in Laurel, where police say he'd broken in to hide.  They used a taser to get Mohamad under control.

"He came out of the trailer, but did not follow commands.  They were giving verbal commands," Shipley said.

Mohamad is a suspected car thief who tried to flee following his arrest Sunday in connection with a stolen car at a dealership in Harford County.  Authorities say he used several aliases and was "known to police."

"Many hours have been spent trying to identify who he is.  We believe we have his correct identity," Shipley said.

Police feared he might try to steal a car during the busy morning rush.

"Our trooper, we expect, will recover from these injuries, but she is being treated at the hospital," Shipley said.

This escape is one of several recent acts of violence by inmates at Maryland hospitals.  Last year, an inmate shot corrections officer Jeffrey Wroten in the head while under guard at a western Maryland hospital and last month, a man wanted for murder overpowered a police officer at Mercy Medical Center in downtown Baltimore and jumped 10 stories to his death.
