A national Republican star was in Maryland Thursday night to campaign for an embattled Republican congressman.
Dennis Edwards reports Newt Gingrich came to Annapolis to headline a fundraiser for Representative Wayne Gilchrest. Gilchrest is a nine-term incumbent who faces a primary challenge from two Republican state senators, one of whom has outraised him.
Gilchrest says he admires Gingrich, a former speaker of the U.S. House. He also says the event will burnish his credentials as a Republican. Some have said Gilchrest is too moderate for Republican primary voters.
The campaign continues on the Eastern Shore. The two Republican senators -- Andy Harris and E.J. Pipkin -- have a forum Thursday night in Queen Anne's County.
They'll debate Gilchrest later this month, and the primaries are Feb. 12.
