Flames rip through a historic landmark in Carroll County.
The one room school house was home to an elderly woman before it exploded in the middle of the night.
Jessica Kartalija reports the explosion was felt miles away.
"That was her husband, they all went to school together, here," said neighbor Nancy Seals as she through pictures pulled from the rubble.
Nancy Seals and her famly searched through splintered wood and ash.
"We've been just trying to salvage anything we can find that she would really make her know that everyone is thinking of her," she said of her family's effort to help their neighbors.
Just before two this morning neighbors on Flag Marsh Road got a rude awakening.
"I heard a very loud explosion, I jumped up, looked out the window, saw a ball of flame go up in the air," said neighbor Richard Beck.
The explosion could be felt for miles, it leveled one home and destroyed two more.
BGE pulled debris from powerlines as investigators began working to determine what caused the explosion.
"We believe we had a propane leak, but as far as what triggered the explosion, it's still under investigation," said Joseph Zurolo spokesman for the Maryland state Fire Marshal's office.
The home was originally a one-room school house built in the 1800's.
"She met her husband, they went to school here, it was a one room school house. They got married, moved in there and raised their family.", said Seals.
85-year-old Myra Davis has owned this propery for years, but she hasn't been able to stay here recently because she's been ill. We're told she visited the home at least three times a week.
David Smith has lived next door for 20 years and while his home is severely damaged by the explosion, he's happy to be alive.
"Nobody happened to be passing by at that time, it was just an amazing thing that nobody was hurt," said Smith.
Residents who cant stay inside their homes are staying with neighbors and are being assisted by the American Red Cross.
Police say it could be weeks before the damage can be cleared.
