Former D.C. Tax Clerk Sentenced For Mortgage Fraud
WASHINGTON (AP) ―
A federal judge has sentenced a former D.C. tax office worker to three years probation in a mortgage fraud scandal.
Temika Gustus, 28, pleaded guilty in August to lying on a mortgage application in Maryland. Prosecutors say she falsely claimed she had a second job and inflated one of her bank balances in an application to the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
A $48.1 million tax embezzlement scam uncovered in the D.C. tax office led federal investigators to Gustus.
Gustus isn't accused of being involved in the tax scandal. But authorities say a key member of the scheme played a role in Gustus' mortgage fraud. Prosecutors say Alethia Grooms made fake pay stubs and forged a bank statement to help Gustus get a home loan.
