Metro officials say red line trains will return to their regular speeds for the July 4 holiday weekend, the first time since last week's deadly crash.
Except for those passing between the Takoma and Fort Totten stations, all trains will resume their normal speeds at 7 a.m. Friday. Metro also will have additional eight-car trains to carry more riders throughout the holiday.
Trains on the red line had been limited to 35 mph since the crash. Regular speeds vary depending on where trains in the system, but trains go up to 40 mph downtown, and up to 59 mph in suburban areas.
Officials say the Takoma station will close at 10 p.m. Thursday so investigators can continue working to determine the cause of the crash that killed nine people.
