Md. Stops Referral Bonuses In Corrections

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) ― Prisons officials say they have eliminated bonuses it had offered to recruit correctional officers.

Mark Vernarelli, spokesman for the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services, says the move was prompted by "fiscal challenges." The change took effect on Wednesday.

Steve Berger of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, which represents correctional officers, said recruitment efforts would suffer without the bonuses.

Vernarelli said he hoped that wouldn't happen. He added that starting salary for state correctional officers is about $36,000.
