Governor O'Malley Honors Veterans Past And Present

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJZ) ― With the sacrifices of our brave soldiers fresh in our minds, Memorial Day events are underway across the state including in Annapolis.

Mike Hellgren reports Governor Martin O'Malley took time to honor our troops.

Generations of those who served our country came together in Annapolis.

The Governor honored Maryland veterans including those who fought in World War II at a ceremony commemorating the 65th anniversary of D-Day.

The 29th Infantry Division was the only one from the national guard to land on D-Day, made up of many Maryland soldiers.

"The Governor wanted to recognize World War II veterans, obviously there are fewer and fewer of those. In addition, I, as national commander invited him to come with us to Normandy," said Robert Finn, Director of the 29th Division Association.

"We were waiting for dark to come, cause the snipers were having a picnic, they were killing more people in our unit than anything else. Anything that moved, they shot at," said Platoon Sgt. Austin Cox, World War II veteran.

Also honored in Annapolis the guard's 224th Area Support Medical Company.

Members told the Governor they missed Maryland crabs, so they were all treated to a crab cake dinner on the lawn at government house.

"Everybody said crabs, crabs or crab cakes. So the restrictions on sending those types of things overseas were too difficult. Also the operational tempo was too high we couldn't do it, so he brought us here today to feed us the crab cakes," said Captain Brad Hudson, 224th Support Medical Company.

"It's a great day, you know there's a real spirit present here, of service and love of country, and to see that patriotism spanning the generations as it is, makes you real proud to be an American," said Governor O'Malley.

The Governor will be at the 20th anniversary of Maryland's Vietnam Veterans Memorial on Monday.
