Man Accused In Kids' Murder Is Competent For Trial

BALTIMORE (WJZ/AP) ― The Rockville man accused of drowning his three children in a Baltimore hotel has been found competent to stand trial. The doctor's report says he fully understands and accepts responsibility for murdering his children.

Kelly McPherson reports Mark Castillo was in court Tuesday afternoon.

A forensic psychiatrist told Baltimore Circuit Judge Gale Rasin Tuesday that Castillo has been diagnosed with severe depression and is taking Prozac, but that would not affect his ability to go through trial.

Police say Castillo confessed to drowning his three children -- ages 6, 4 and 2 -- in the bathtub of a downtown Baltimore hotel room in March.

Rasin said she would rule later on whether Castillo is competent to represent himself, but she said it would not be a good idea. In August, Castillo told a judge that he wanted to fire his public defenders and plead guilty.

Attorneys are under a gag order.
